Preparing for Vaccine-Preventable Pandemics
We’ve developed the Seasonal and Pandemic Influenza Vaccination Assessment (SPIVA) Toolkit for local health department staff and others involved in planning and preparing for H1N1 and other potential vaccine-preventable pandemics. The SPIVA Toolkit complements the mass vaccination implementation guidance provided by state and federal agencies to local health departments.

Toolkit Components
The SPIVA toolkit is designed to use in part, or in whole. The toolkit highlights three data-collection methods for community assessment: key informant interviews, focus groups, and community-based surveys. We describe those methods, identify their purposes, include practice tips, and present field examples throughout the toolkit. Each section of the toolkit provides guidance and examples pertaining to different aspects of community assessment. Each of the appendices can be used as a stand-alone resource to augment existing plans or assist with ongoing community assessments. Taken as a whole, this toolkit provides guidance, examples, and functional resources to assist users with implementing community assessments in their jurisdiction.
